Charon's Obols

Charon's Obols is a one-page, rules-lite RPG set in the Greek Underworld for 1 GM and 1-3 players. Or play solo using the variant rules below!

Solo Variant:

Play the game as written, but roll 2d6 after defeating the obol guardian at each location.  You find an obol only on a roll of 7. Otherwise, you're unsuccessful and will need to continue your journey. After each location you investigate, you may adjust your roll +/- 1 for each location you've explored.

Examples:

• You've explored 1 location, so you roll 2d6 to see if you find an obol. You roll a 4. Because you've completed one location, you may adjust the result +/- 1. Unfortunately, the +1 only increases your roll to 5. You're unsuccessful and must continue your journey.
• You've explored 2 locations, so you roll 2d6. This time, you roll a 9. Because you've explored two locations, you may adjust the result +/- 1 or +/- 2. You adjust your roll by -2, decreasing your result to 7. You're successful! You may head to Charon to pay for passage or continue exploring the underworld until you're satisfied with the number on your judgment track.

If you fail to roll a 7 after visiting all four locations, you do not find an obol and cannot pay Charon for passage across the River Styx. Your fate is sealed, and you must wander the Plains of Ash for eternity.
