As the sun sets over Jemez Springs, New Mexico, arid heat gives way to cool breezes carrying the aroma of ponderosa pine, chimney smoke, and the acrid tang of blood. Famous for the steamy, soothing waters that emerge from its underground geothermal vents, Jemez Springs has a dark secret.

Once a year, around this time, people go missing, and the crystal-clear waters of the Jemez hot springs run black with blood.

The old god that resides in the hot springs is hungry, and it’s time to feed.
